Hooked On a Feeling…

Some photos from our yearly pilgramige to the wonderful Hook Norton Beer Festival, deep in the Oxfordshire / Cotswolds / Home Counties countryside - whatever you want to call it (if you are English) the scenery is stunning, the welcome is warm, the pig roast frighteningly fattening (but mouth wateringly-good!) and the beer is flowing by the barrel!

HURRAH!

This was my fourth, my wife’s second, Gideon’s sixth and also Ollie’s second. So there was plenty of experience amongst our crew, not to mention last year’s event was my stag do, which saw me at one stage of the evening in a red catsuit (never to be repeated) - although photographic evidence can be found on the inter-webs!

This year in all there was a grand total of 138 beers and ciders (of which there were just a handful of) so the selection was not to be sniffed at and all on cask too. Whilst predominately its a “Real Ale” festival and the large bulk of the beers on offer are mild mannered session ales, there are always a few gems to be found on the list and armed with good descriptions / tasting notes to help make your decisions its never a chore.

Whilst I have never visited the village’s own Hook Norton Brewery (which I intend to put right in September, when we plan to go back to make Scrumpy) they always have a decent selection of their own wares and this year was no different, along with the Hooky Gold, Haymaker, Old Hooky and other seasoned favourites there were a few curious new beers - with AMERICAN HOPS!

DUN DUN DUHHHH!

Sadly the Centennial Red and Centennial IPA’s were not ready to drink apparently (well not before we staggered back to the farm anyway) but they did have a very nice Cascade Ale and a beer called “Tew Drop” - which was my fave of the fest and had a good whack of Amarillo in it. These didn’t sit soooo well with some of our local counterparts but I was impressed by these potential one offs. It shows that even an albeit locally   successful brewery is thinking outside the box and looking to extend its reach further a field into other markets and regardless of the American hops, the base beers style’s were essentially British in character.

Anyways a good time was had by all, both local and us visitors, the Saturday night reached a climax with more beer back at the farm and some Korean food I had prepared on the Thursday night. Normally we congregate in the wood shed, play cards and chat drunken nonsense till the wee hours but this year the weather was having none of that and it aaas just too damn warm to be inside!

Mission accomplished - well till next year!

Football beers…

4 years ago, at the last World Cup this picture would have looked somewhat different, my choice of beer would almost have certainly been pissy yellow fizz, a lot has happened since then…

In the absence of anything “really” tasty craft beer wise in the local shop Marstons Pedigree it is…

Oh Canada…

So yesterday was Canada day…
I know, I would have know otherwise unless someone told me! But I have a couple of Canadian mates, a good friend of mine is moving over there at the end of the year. Last time he was over there he sent me a picture of a bottle of this, sat in the snow on decking outside his girlfriends summer house, saying “Tom Green” looked like me when I had a beard! I joked and asked him to bring me a bottle back, lo and behold he did, so I vowed to save it for Canada day - which he said I wouldn’t manage (knowing my appetite for beer) but it’s been sat in my fridge for 4 months and last night it was drunk, damn good it was too!

Happy Canada Day guys…

forcera:

Gordon Strong’s presentation on the 2014 BJCP Style Guidelines. It’s around 50 minutes long but it’s worth a watch. I posted a link to the slides that he used earlier but it’s nice to have him go over the changes.

Also if you haven’t checked out Chop and Brew you really should. Chip has some really good videos out there. Plus he brings you things like this!!!

Essential viewing…thanks forcera :)
